TERRACOTTA

Terracotta art is a timeless expression of Indian craftsmanship and clay based nonvitreous ceramic fired at low temperatures having brownish-orange colour. It is practiced mainly in Bishnupur & Panchmura of Bankura district. A wide range of products include decorative sculptures, tiles, wall art, vases, planters, figurines etc.

PATACHITRA & MADURKATHI MAT

Patachitra or Pattachitra is traditional, cloth based scroll painting practiced in Nayagram / Pingla of Jhargram district, Birbhum, Bardhaman and Murshidabad district. This include gods & goddesses like Ram, Sita, Krishna, Radha, Shiva, Ganesha, Saraswati and Durga. Other products are Manasha, Chandi, Tales about Behula & Lakshinder, natural elements like lotus, birds, animals etc. Madurkathi mats are traditional handmade floor and sitting mats mainly from Medinipur. This is crafted from a special plant named Madurkathi and include floor mats, table mat, runners etc.

DHOKRA METAL CRAFTS

Dhokra art is an ancient Indian metal casting tradition still practiced in Bankura & Bardhaman district in West Bengal. The lost wax technique to create intricate figurines, jewellery and home decor items from brass metal is practiced. A wide range of products include Figures of deities like Lakshmi, Durga, Shiva, Saraswati and Ganesha. Also available depictions of animals like elephants, peacocks and bulls, Decorative pieces, Jewellery, lamps and many more.

JUTE PRODUCTS

The Chhau mask is a traditional culture heritage of Purulia district in the InWest Bengal is the largest jute producing state in India. Jute products include fashionable bags, ropes, curtains, cushion covers, bed sheets, handicraft like flower pots, jewellery, lamp shades, baskets, blankets, curtains, shopping bags, tissue boxes, carpets, wall hangings, dolls, home furnishing and stationery items.dian state of West Bengal. These are classified into nari, babu, bir, bhoot, animal and birds. The nari category includes Durga, Parvati, Saraswati and incarnation of Goddess. The babu masks include male gods like Ganesha, Narayana, Kartik, Krishna, Shiva. The bir or hero masks include Ravana and Mahishasura. Tiger, buffalo, monkey heros like Bali and Sugriva are under animal category. Bird masks are for Jayatu, peacock etc.

LEATHER PRODUCTS

Leather products are made in Santiniketan and surrounding villages of Birbhum district of West Bengal. The material used is vegetable tanned leather. Leather goods include a wide range of artistic leather bags, handbags, wallet etc.

WOODEN HANDICRAFTS

This handicrafts include items such as wooden dolls and toys, jewellery box, traditional mirror frames, trays, wall hangings, decorative items like elephants, animals and religious idols, statues and utensils. Notable centres are within Bardhaman, Bankura and Birbhum districts.

KANTHA EMBROIDERY

A traditional folk art of Bengal in which women repurpose the old saris and dhotis by layering and stitching them with a simple running stitch to create functional items and story-telling art. Kantha embroidery includes Sujani, Baiton kantha, Oaar kantha, Arshilata kantha, Durjani kantha, Rumal kantha and Lepkantha.

COPPER HANDICRAFTS

Key crafting centres are in Kolkata and Midnapore. Copper products include drinkware (bottles, mugs, glasses, pitcher)s, Kitchenware (pots, bowls, plates, cutlery), Decorative items (vases, candle holders, wall hangings, sculptures, lamps, diya), Religious idols (Ganesh, Lakshmi, Vishnu, Kuber) and accessories like bracelets, jewellery boxes, bangles etc.

Bamboo and cane crafts root mainly in Cooch Beher and Bankura district of West Bengal and include a wide range of household items like baskets, mats, trays and boxes, Decorative items like lamp shades, wall hangings and flower baskets, Other items like bags, jewellery and many more

CONCH SHELL CRAFTS (Sankha Shilpa)

Practiced for centuries mainly in Bishnupur of Bankura district. Conch shell crafts include a wide array of items like bangles, armlets, rings, lockets, hairpins, buttons, table lamps, incense holders, ashtrays, spoons, forks and many more
